It was a great day for the Morenci Wildcats as the girls basketball team defeated St. David 48-45 in a nailbiter.

The match was held at Eastern Arizona College and hosted by Safford.

After the first quarter, Morenci trailed St. David 15-13.

The Wildcats gained the lead in the second quarter and took a 25-23 advantage into halftime.

Morenci extended its lead to 40-32 in the third quarter and looked to hold on for the win.

St. David outscored Morenci in the fourth quarter but the Wildcats were able to hold on for a 48-45 victory.

Zeneyah Cortez led the team with 11 points while Julianna Aguilar added 10.

Morenci faced Willcox on Monday after the Copper Era went to press. The team returns to the hardwood on Dec. 28 to face Faith Bible from Oregon at the Epic Tourneys New Year’s Classic hosted by Chandler Prep.

The Wildcats next home game is Jan. 4 when Morenci hosts Silver High from New Mexico.

Senior night is Jan. 27 when they host the Pima Roughriders.
