SAFFORD — Safford High School announced that Sheri Camarena will take over as the new head boys basketball coach in 2019-20.
Camarena has a long history with the sport of basketball as a player and coach. Sheri was a four-year high school letterman who led her team to a New Mexico state championship. She continued her athletic career at Western New Mexico University, where she played both volleyball and basketball, earning All-American honors in both sports.
At the end of her college career, she held several records in both sports and ultimately received the honor of being inducted into WNMU’s Hall of Fame.
Camarena extended her passion for sports into a coaching career, coaching youths at a variety of different levels and in different sports over the past 15 years.
“We are excited to have coach Camarena on board because of the experience and expertise she will bring to our program. She is a well-respected leader in our school and community,” said Toni Corona, Safford High School athletic director.
Camarena is currently the high school varsity volleyball coach and tennis coach.
