SAFFORD — Team Elko Wire Rope and Team Bushman Dental Care battled each other in the Minors of Mt. Graham Little League on Thursday.
After three close innings, Elko’s pitchers ran out of gas. and Bushman raked in a bunch of runs in the fourth to get the win, 11-2.
Elko’s Teagyn Masterson scored an early run in the first off a double and was batted in by Gage Rundquist. Bushman answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning off a trio of singles and two walks.
Kaybian Chavez picked up a second run for Elko off a walk and three stolen bases in the third. And then Bushman unloaded in the bottom of the fourth, picking their pitches to collect seven walked batters, one base hit, and seven runs before Elko’s third baseman performed an unassisted double-play by catching a fly out and tagging third base.
Elko loaded up the bases in the final inning before getting struck out to end the game.
Elko Wire Rope head coach Justin Stahl said, “They did well all year. We started off real rough, but we made it to the championship game. We just ran out of pitching. That’s what it came down to. They never gave up and gave it everything they’ve got. I’m proud of every one of them.”
Team Bushman Dental head coach Justin Echols said, “I am very proud of them. The most important thing is they’re good boys and very coachable, and they all liked each other. Everybody got along, and we had a really fun time. This is the best age group to coach because they come so far so quick. Some can’t even catch and throw, and by the end of the season, they’re all catching and throwing. They look good.”
Little League closing ceremonies will be held at Graham County Fairgrounds on June 1 at 7 p.m.
